Resume is your self-presentation document. It is an important paper that contains your biography, skills, and motivation, allowing the employer to learn about you. Resumes in Japan have their own unique features. Here are a few key points:

Format: Japanese people often use standard resume templates, such as “履歴書” (Rirekisho) and “職務経歴書” (Shokumu Keirekisho). The first is for general information, while the second provides details about work experience.

Personal Information: Include your name, address, phone number, and email. In Japan, it is also customary to include your date of birth and a photo.

Education and Work Experience: Start with your most recent school or job and work backward. Provide exact dates, the name of the institution or company, and your position.

Skills: Describe your professional skills and competencies that may be beneficial to the employer.

Language Skills: Indicate your proficiency levels in Japanese and other languages.

Style: The resume should be concise and neatly formatted.

Proofreading: Check for spelling and grammar errors before submission.

Self-Presentation (自己PR): This is a key element! Clearly demonstrate what kind of professional you are so that the employer wants to meet you. Describe your experience and achievements, explaining how they will benefit the company. Here are three tips:

  1. Highlight Your Value: Emphasize how you can contribute to the company’s success.
  2. Communicate Clearly: Speak in a way that allows the listener to easily understand your strengths and qualifications.
  3. Be a Hireable Candidate: Aim to be the kind of candidate you would want to hire yourself!

Let’s look at examples of describing your strengths.

Example: “My strength is the ability to solve problems quickly.”
